The hard work of Team Kirtland’s many volunteers was formally recognized at a Volunteer Recognition Ceremony April 12, 2019.
Kirtland volunteers donated more than 50,000 hours over the past year to services on base and in the greater Albuquerque area.
“I can’t tell you how excited I am to be a part of an installation that cares so much about the members of its community,” said Col. Richard Gibbs, 377th Air Base Wing commander. “Whether that’s the community on base or the community that we are part of in Albuquerque. It is truly a humbling experience to be here.”
Individual volunteer work was also recognized, with a Volunteer Excellence Award being presented to Stacy Sandoval, 150th Special Operations Wing Key Spouse mentor, for volunteering 3,581 hours over the past year to ensure the families of 150th SOW Airmen receive the help and information they need.
“I don’t do it for the recognition, I do it to help people,” she said. “I try to see whatever I can do to help anybody. I don’t think of it as volunteering, I think of it as giving.”
Maj. David Bullock, 377th Security Operations Group, and 2nd Lt. Jacob Masin, Space and Missile Systems Center, were awarded the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for their work in community service that had a direct impact on the local community.
Bullock volunteered 235 hours teaching a Kirtland’s Financial Peace class, and helped students of the class reduce their personal debt by over $600,000.
Masin volunteered 600 hours as a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response representative and as a Victim Advocate, as well as volunteering at fundraising events and at Albuquerque food banks.
“If you have an opportunity,” said Gibbs. “If you are a member who has been benefiting from the services that have been provided, don’t just take the time this week and today to say thank you, take the time throughout the year to thank those volunteers.”
