The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57) arrived in Piraeus, Greece, April 13, for a scheduled port visit to enhance U.S.-Greece relations as the two allies work together for a stable, secure, and prosperous region.
The ship’s presence in the Mediterranean Sea is a demonstration of our continued commitment to the collective security of the region, and Mitscher’s port visit in Piraeus is another demonstration of our view of Greece as a pillar of regional stability.
“The people of Greece gave us a very warm reception,” said Cmdr. Ian Scaliatine, commanding officer of Mitscher. “The crew is very excited to explore the history of Athens and learn more about Greek culture. We are looking forward to a great port visit here in Piraeus.”
Mitscher, homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.
U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
