VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Old Salts and Assorted Spies Association visited Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach, April 12.
Old Salts and Assorted Spies is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a social and recreational organization for retirees of the U.S. Naval Reserve Intelligence Command and the former Naval Reserve Intelligence Program.
During their visit to IWTC Virginia Beach, the group received an informational brief on recent changes to naval intelligence and the information warfare community. The brief provided an opportunity for the retirees to ask questions about the current state of naval intelligence, including changes to mobilizations, length of deployments and the ownership of the Joint Regional Intelligence Centers (JRIC).
“It is an honor to meet these shipmates and those who forged this awesome legacy of Navy Reserve intelligence,” said Capt. Kirk Luker, liaison officer for Naval Information Force Reserve.
An IWTC Virginia Beach command overview brief was also given by the command’s executive officer (XO), Lt. Cmdr. Brielle Adamovich. This brief discussed the mission and scope of IWTC Virginia Beach and how its current operations fully reflect the mission of the entire information warfare community rather than just the intelligence community. Other topics covered included command relationships, Ready Relevant Learning initiatives, courses taught in Virginia Beach and the other learning sites and IWTC Virginia Beach’s alignment within the Naval Education and Training Command organization.
“Being a cryptology XO in the birthplace of naval intelligence, I wanted to be respectful to our history while communicating our new alignment into information warfare. The brief was well-received by the Old Salts and Assorted Spies, and their fond memories and enthusiasm for our mission was absolutely motivating,” said Adamovich.
The Old Salts and Assorted Spies also received a tour of the IWTC Virginia Beach spaces and had a meet-and-greet with the recently graduated Reserve Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course. The tour concluded in the Hall of Valor memorial to fallen intelligence professionals, where they were greeted by the IWTC Virginia Beach Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Richard Bosworth.
“It was a pleasure and honor to visit IWTC Virginia Beach today. It was informative to see the briefings and how the information has grown to impact the creation of the type command and all of its training. This was my first opportunity to attend this group’s visit and to renew friendships and share sea stories,” said retired Rear Adm. Gordon Russell. “This would be a great opportunity to invite the other retired information warfare community groups like the Old Crows Association to gather in the future or even create a new organization comprised of all the other communities.”
IWTC Virginia Beach, located in Dam Neck Annex, currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contractors who train over 6,500 students every year. It is one of four school houses for Center for Information Warfare Training and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning IW community training.
With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
