FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – The Pennsylvania National Guard’s senior inspector general civilian won the Department of the Army Inspector General (DAIG) of the year competition for 2018.

David Kauffman, who has been with the office since 2003 as an advisor to the uniformed command IG, was also awarded the new Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal April 15 by the adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Anthony Carrelli.

“This is huge, you are not just the best in the region or best in the state, you are the absolute best in the Army, of all the civilians in the IG, it’s an amazing thing,” said Carrelli, adding that this award reflects much more than just one year of work, it represents a lifetime.

The inspector general functions as an internal watchdog. The Army inspector general routinely investigates allegations of misconduct by Army officials at the rank of colonel or below. Their primary role is to investigate complaints of waste, fraud or abuse that violate Army rules and regulations.
