    U.S. Army Europe and Africa

WIESBADEN, Germany (April 16, 2019) – The U.S. Army Office of the Chief of Public Affairs announced winners of its 2018 Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Communications Awards Competition April 10. Among them were 15 Soldiers and civilians representing U.S. Army Europe.

“These awards reflect the stellar job done by the entire team of PAOs for their superior mass communication work in support of the Army in Europe,” said Col. Joseph E. Scrocca, U.S. Army Europe director of public affairs.

The annual contest, established in 1970, is named after former Army Chief of Information Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware. A World War II Medal of Honor recipient, Ware was killed in action in September 1968 while serving as 1st Infantry Division commander in Vietnam.

The awards program recognizes military and civilian journalists for outstanding achievements in furthering the objectives of Army public affairs.

“I guess I’m a full spectrum journalist,” said Staff Sgt. Adrian Patoka, 21st Theater Support Command, who earned two honorable mentions and a first-place award.

Patoka, who began his Army career in explosive ordnance disposal, re-classified to public affairs in 2016, the year he won his first Keith L. Ware award.

“It’s great telling the Army story and getting recognized for it. It sets an example for our peers. It’s the greatest job in the Army, to get out there and tell the Soldier’s story. It’s fun and unique at the same time,” he said.

Josh Wick, a public affairs specialist with U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs, was recognized with a first-place award for an infographic he created to support the biannual exercise Noble Partner.

“It’s a simplified way to convey technical or mundane information and turn it into something that’s interesting, but still easily understood,” said Wick about his winning entry.

When asked if public affairs practitioners keep award competitions in mind as they go about their daily missions and productions, Wick responded, “You think about it, not necessarily for an award, but . . . is this something that could be set as a standard across your unit or organization.”
Patoka agreed, saying winning an award isn’t a consideration when he’s working a story or product.

“Once I get it produced and publish it, I keep KLW in the back of my mind, in case it might be one to consider,” he said.

U.S. Army first-place winners will go on to compete in the DoD Thomas Jefferson Awards later this year.
