CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – Kubasaki High School students were treated with a barbecue lunch for the Month of the Military Child April 17 on Camp Foster.

The barbecue was held to commend military children for persevering and adapting to the many challenges they face as part of the military community.

“This is a special time of year when we recognize the challenges that these kids are under,” said Gregg Mowen, the principal of Kubasaki High School. “We want them to know that the challenges they face and the way they move through it with resilience is met with love and support.”

Marine and sailor volunteers prepared hotdogs and burgers by the hundreds, while senior military leadership served it to high school students. According to Mowen, many of the senior leadership themselves are parents, which prompted them to participate in the event. It was more than just volunteering, instead, it touched on a more personal level.

Col. Vincent J. Ciuccoli, the commanding officer for Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, attended the event as well. According to Ciuccoli, the true military child contributes to the family by building readiness. Ciuccoli continued by adding that the contributions and volunteer work done by military children, especially young adults, make them just as much a part of the community as any service member.

“We have to listen to them. They have a voice here, and listening to that voice is important,” said Ciuccoli.
