MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, California – Volunteering is an effort that can often go unnoticed even though it is a selfless act done to support others. On April 23rd, U.S. Marine Corps Col. Jeffrey Holt, deputy commander, Marine Corps Installations West, Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Pendleton took a moment to recognize those individuals and units who dedicate their time helping others during a Volunteer Recognition Ceremony at the Pacific Views Event Center.

“We recognize all units and organizations who have volunteered over 500 hours of service throughout the year,” said Lori Lirette, family readiness branch head, Family Readiness Branch, Marine & Family Programs Division.

"We want to make sure that the volunteers realize that what they are doing is benefiting others and we appreciate it," said Lirette.

The active-duty service members and civilians recognized today, support not only their unit and base full-time but their community as well.

“We do our job as Marines every day to accomplish the mission, but at the end of the day, we accomplish the mission in our communities too and we show the people that we’re proud to serve them,” said Gunnery Sgt. Joshua Gonzalez, military volunteer of the year, Preservation, Packaging and Packing Platoon, 1st Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group.

According to Lirette, in 2018, MCB Camp Pendleton had 3,316 registered volunteers who dedicated 53,919 volunteer hours. The estimate a volunteer service hour equals is $24.69. This dynamic show of support resulted in savings to the installation and the community of $1.3 million.

All award recipients were nominated by either their command, peers, or volunteer organization supervisors.

This year, volunteers were judged in eight categories: Military and Civilian Volunteer of the Year, Large, Medium and Small Volunteer Units of the Year, Civilian Medium and Small Teams of the Year, and Youth Volunteer of the Year.

The individual winners for 2018 were:
Military Volunteer of the Year – Gunnery Sgt. Joshua Gonzalez
Civilian Volunteer of the Year – Gilbert “Gunner” Bolton
Youth Volunteer of the Year – Chance Hughes
