Diane McDowell, the former manager of the Route 66 Café and all matters that are food-related aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, retired from service at the base during a special event April 18.
She spent 12 years providing catering for events all over MCLB Barstow, including the Halloween Haunt, golf tournaments, holiday parties and other special events aboard base during her tenure.
During her retirement party at the Route 66 Café, McDowell was presented with her Honorary Desert Rat certificate. In addition, since MCLB Barstow has the most rail lines of any facility in the Department of Defense, she received an engraved railroad spike with her dates of service and the inscription “Fair Winds … Following Seas,” a statement of good luck traditionally bestowed on retiring Marines and Sailors. She also received a collage composed of photographs of her taken at various times throughout her career with the base.
“She was always hardworking,” Dr. Will Artis, MCCS operations officer, said. “She came in hurt or not feeling well and yet she persevered. She has been of extreme help. You are very special and will be sorely missed.”
“I’ve been here a long time and I will miss everyone, especially all of the people at the restaurant,” McDowell told the group of well-wishers. “This is bittersweet for me. It’s making me sad to say goodbye.”
