The Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) played host to a visit from Erica Plath, Director, Strategic Mobility and Combat Logistics Division (OPNAV N42) in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations. April 24, in San Diego. The visit was part of a Southern California installation tour by Plath.
Plath toured the ship with Capt. John Rotruck, commanding officer of Mercy's Medical Treatment Facility, Capt. Lynelle M. Boamah, executive officer of Mercy’s Medical Treatment Facility, Capt. John Olmsted, Mercy’s civil service master, and Timothy McCully, deputy commander, Military Sealift Command Pacific. The tour included Casualty Reception, X-Ray Department, operating rooms, intensive care unit and the isolation unit, bridge and flight deck. Over lunch, in the ship’s galley, Plath and the ship’s senior military and civilian crew members answered questions and discussed issues pertinent to the ship and Plath’s position in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
“We are always honored to welcome guests from outside of San Diego, especially Washington D.C.,” said McCully. “Visits like this one are a great exchange of knowledge and ideas from both sides and are how we can continue to stay mission ready and funded into the future.”
Mercy is currently on station in San Diego, Calif. in a reduced operating status, training and planning for its next mission.
