The 48th Fighter Wing completed a 48-hour readiness exercise, designated “FURIOUS 48,” Apr. 24.
The exercise was developed to test and train Liberty Wing Airmen on their ability to survive and operate in wartime conditions.
“This exercise continues the fight, allowing us to take lessons learned from last October and re-applying in a simulated combat environment,” said Lt. Col. Jason Heard, 48th FW Plans and Programs chief. “The purpose was to ensure the 48th Fighter Wing is prepared to meet any threat by generating airpower and surviving in a highly-contested simulated combat environment.”
During FURIOUS 48, the entire wing participated in a wide array scenarios. The training focused on pre-attack preparedness, self-aid and buddy care, post-attack reconnaissance and rapid contingency response.
"The Liberty Wing proved ready to fight any adversary, even in a contested environment,” said Heard. “The Airmen of the 48th performed superbly as they accomplished the mission, from medical response to a mass casualty, to securing our base, sustaining our force, and generating and flying mission ready fighter aircraft 24 hours a day.”
Exercises like these are designed to demonstrate the wing’s readiness and ability to represent U.S. national defense interests in the European theater, as well as provide an important element of NATO’s defense structure.
“Sustained training such as this ensures we’re prepared to survive and operate in a variety of contingency environments and defend our nation, the United Kingdom and other allies, day or night,” said Col. William Marshall, 48th Fighter Wing commander.
The 48th FW plans to conduct readiness exercises at least twice a year, ensuring the wing maintains a capable force.
