Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) partnered with the Bahrain Olympic Committee to host a basketball game at the base gymnasium on Apr. 19.

NSA Bahrain’s top players battled against the Bahrain Olympic Committee’s all star team for the first time ever.

“This is the first year we partnered with the local Bahraini professional league. We’ve looked at doing this for two years and we finally executed it this year. With the success we’ve had today, we’ll be looking to make this an annual event,” said MWR Fitness Director Joseph Belt. “We spoke with Coach [Sam] Vincent, a local basketball coach at Riffa, about coordinating this event and he reached out to several local sports clubs at Riffa, Muharraq [and] Sitra and organized a team. The Riffa team just won a local championship so the caliber of players that our guys played tonight are on par at a professional level.”

Before the game started, players from both teams engaged in a skills challenge. Players dribbled through cones, passed the ball through the net, then dribbled down the opposite side of the court and shot a layup, followed by a three-point shot competition.

Afterwards, two fans engaged in a half-court shoot-out.
“This is the beginning of a great partnership with local professional club leagues. MWR Sports is honored to host with the local community sports teams and looks forward to a competitive event,” Belt added.

The game ran the standard length in four, 10-minute quarters.

During halftime, the Bahrain School falcon cheerleaders entertained patrons with a performance and youth competed in a three-point shooting contest, among other things.

One of the NSA Bahrain players discussed how he was feeling about the game during halftime as well.

“So far we’re just getting our rhythm, catching our pace and trying to figure out the level of skill we’re playing against. It’s fun, but it’s a competition. So we want to win of course. Overall, it’s been a pretty good game so far; very competitive,” said NSA Bahrain point guard, Aviation Maintenance Administrationman 1st class Marcus Jefferson.

Sam Vincent, coach for the Bahrain Olympic Committee’s all star team, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership with NSA Bahrain.

"I am excited to collaborate with the base to grow basketball in Bahrain and help develop youth through sports," he said.

Ultimately, NSA Bahrain’s team won the game 80 to 77.
