TORUN, Poland - Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 5th Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division resupplied their M109A6 Paladin howitzers with ammo and fuel before they head to a firing point for table 11 certifications in Torun, Poland, April 16, 2019.
Throughout April and May, the Battalion will conduct their platoon level artillery table certifications, which consists of tables seven to 12. The Soldiers loaded up on ammo in preparation for these certifications. Capt. Travis Miner, the fire direction officer for the battalion, explained the importance of preparing the Paladins for table 11 certifications and live-fire training.
“This is what’s called an R3SP. This is where the artillery crews pick-up ammo and get topped off on fuel before they head to a firing point,” said Miner. “Once they get to a firing point, they start their dry firing missions.”
Re-supplying their vehicles was only part of the mission for table 11. It’s a process that requires a few phases that encompass the training.
“There are a few stages to moving through this table,” said Miner. “They have to go through the whole process of loading the ammo, recording it, tracking it and then shooting these missions, which are dry fire missions. Once we test them in a dry fire, then we move them into artillery table 12, which is the platoon live firing missions.”
As table 11 is a fire mission which occurs in stages, so too is the process of progressing through the 18 total artillery firing table certifications.
“In the big picture, table 11 fits into a system that includes 18 tables,” said Miner. “Once they are live fire qualified as a section, we take those gun sections and the fire direction center, and then bring them all together, here, for tables 11-12. So, it’s a process that trains them to eventually get to Table 18, which is the culminating event that includes the entire Battalion.”
