U.S. Marines marched alongside Republic of Korea Marines in a parade signifying the start of the 70th anniversary of the City of Pohang and the R.O.K. Marine Corps Apr. 27 in Pohang, South Korea.
R.O.K. Marines used the festival to show the local community their military capabilities and strengthen the relationship with the U.S. Marines.
“I think it’s good for the image of both the U.S. and R.O.K. Marines to be out here taking pictures,” said U.S. Marine 2nd Lt. David Ables, a platoon commander with Combat Logistics Battalion 3, attached to Camp Mujuk. “I think face time in general is good. The more appearances we make, the more we aren’t just some figure that no one sees. When the community sees and interact with us, they get to know us.”
U.S. Marines displayed tactical vehicles beside R.O.K. Marines demonstrating ways they work together.
“Personally, as a R.O.K. Marine having the U.S. on our side is assuring,” said Pfc. Yoonjong Lee, a R.O.K. Marine. “I think we can both learn from each other."
Members of the local community took photos with both groups of Marines and had the chance to try on different gear.
“This event gives U.S. Marines great exposure to the Pohang community,” said Lee. “I think this kind of exposure is really good to help the civilians become more familiar with the U.S. Marines. It also allows R.O.K. Marines like myself a chance to learn from them, learn about the gear and learn about both Marine Corps.”
