Commander, Carrier Strike Group 3 (CCSG 3) hosted a reception aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) while in port in Marseille, April 29.

Rear Adm. Michael Wettlaufer, CCSG 3, and leadership from the strike group gave speeches, dined and socialized with guests from Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have the opportunity to operate with the French navy,” said Wettlaufer. “It is critical to continue to show fidelity around the world and operate together.”

The French navy F70AA-class air defense destroyer FS Cassard (D 35) sailed with ships assigned to CCSG 3, including the John C. Stennis, for more than 25 days in the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. The French Marine Nationale aircraft carrier FS Charles de Gaulle’s (F 91) carrier strike group also conducted a passing exercise and cross-deck training of personnel with the John C. Stennis, April 15.

“The United States and France share the common values of democracy, liberty, and security,” said Jamie McCourt, U.S. Ambassador to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco. “Equally as important, we both demonstrate the willingness to act in order to achieve these values. Through these joint trainings, the French navy and the U.S. Navy deepened their relationship and improve the interoperability of their forces around the world.”

Sentiments of camaraderie were echoed by both hosts and guests of the reception.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate one of the oldest partnerships in our nation’s history,” said Command Master Chief Benjamin D. Rushing, the John C. Stennis’ senior-most enlisted leader.

“It was an honor to be invited to the reception because I am half American and my father was an American soldier during WWII,” said Steve Patris, a guest from Brussels. “This event represents what we’ve done together to maintain democracy.”

Allies, both old and new, are crucial to the Navy’s overseas missions, and working together benefits all regional partners.

The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSCSG) is deployed in support of maritime security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
