In the spirit of Aloha, DLA Distribution Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, celebrated 20 years of outstanding support to the warfighter April 19 with a simple picnic along the breathtaking Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam Waterfront at Foster’s Point with family, friends and colleagues. Seven DLA Distribution Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, plank holders—employees of the distribution center since its inception in 1999—cut the 20th anniversary cake.
The shaka symbol, the unmistakable pinky and thumb salute that is the ultimate symbol of aloha and local culture in Hawaii, was prevalent throughout the day. The shaka sign represents the embodiment of island style and signals that everything is all right. It is a constant reminder that in Hawaii, it is not the norm to worry or rush.
The Defense Distribution Depot was activated at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, April 7, 1999, with 101 civilian employees and seven military employees from Fleet Industrial Supply Center. This activation served as a step forward in establishing a strong partnership between Naval Supply Systems Command and the Defense Logistics Agency. The changeover from FISC to Defense Distribution Depot was initiated to provide better support to customers, mainly to the major industrial/ shore commands and homeported ships. This resulted in enhanced standards for materiel issues, receipts and improved materiel availability and its agreement to position more wholesale material to drive down logistics response times. The name change from Defense Distribution Depot to DLA Distribution Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, occurred in December 2010. Additionally, DDPH currently distributes materiel to 27 homeported ships and submarines as well as 63 major industrial/ shore commands. Furthermore, DDPH has grown to more than 200 civilian, military, and contract employees in order to continue to provide outstanding support to the warfighter.
