With so many attractions within hours of Fort Knox, area residents don’t have to take a two-week vacation to get away from it all.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, an adventure in the great outdoors, a trip into the history of our nation or theme park thrills, the travel agents at Fort Knox’s Information, Tickets and Registration are there to help.

“We are a full travel agency from attraction tickets to vacation packages all over the world. We do it all here,” said Gabriele Ruiz, manager at ITR Leisure Travel. “We need to have your focus, and specific information about when and where you want to go and what you want to do when you get there, but we do it all – and most always with a military discount.”

There are several local attractions within driving distance of the installation.

For couples looking for some alone time and southern hospitality, there are more than 20 bed and breakfast getaways within two hours of Fort Knox, ranging from city life settings in Louisville to working farms in Brandenburg and Bardstown.

With natural attractions like Mammoth Cave, the world’s longest cave located in Cave City, which is about 60 miles south of Fort Knox. There are also seven other caves in the areas around Cave City. These areas feature above- and below-ground trails to hike or horseback as well as a multitude of waterways on which to canoe or float.

There are also opportunities to learn about famous Kentuckians like Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln, Muhammad Ali and others. Both Lincoln’s and Ali’s birthplaces being are in the neighboring cities of Hodgenville and Louisville.

Kentucky’s major theme park, Kentucky Kingdom - formerly Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom - boasts nearly 40 thrill rides and a water theme park, Hurricane Bay, which houses a 750,000-gallon wave pool and nearly 15 water rides. Louisville is also home to MEGA Cavern and MEGA Zips, the only underground zip line in the world, with its six zip lines that traverse through 17 miles of underground tunnelways.

Whether your things is a grand two-week vacation, a daytrip, an overnighter or weekend stay, Ruiz said ITR is the place to make reservations.

“We know Soldiers, and we know what we are able to do for them,” Ruiz said. “We will sit down and design what you want; you have us in front of you. It’s not like the online travel agents.

“That means you know you’re getting exactly what you want.” The trips aren’t [pre] packaged, said Ruiz, but they can be individually done. For more information or to plan a trip, stop by the Hansen Center at1053 Spearhead Division Ave., Bldg. 1053, or call (502) 624-5030.
