For the fourth year running, the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Keesler’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) team hosted a 5K Fun Run as the keystone event for Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Month (SAAPM) April 19.
This year extended the theme from 2018, "Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission."
Previously, the Fun Run was a joint effort between CNATTU Keesler and the Marine Detachment (MARDET) at Keesler Air Force Base. This year Chief Aerographer’s Mate Jacob Wilson, CNATTU Keesler’s SAPR point of contact, decided to go big. Really big.
“Since sexual assault affects everyone, we as a team felt it was of the utmost importance to bring this event to the forefront of the joint environment,” said Wilson. “It only makes sense that since we work in a joint environment, that this awareness run was all inclusive. Since all three branches [Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force] have their own observances, we decided to involve everyone and make this base-wide.”
Before the run commenced, opening remarks were given by Col. Leo Lawson Jr., commander, 81st Training Group and Glen Popejoy, the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator for Keesler Air Force Base. Over 400 participants ran this year, with airmen from the 81st Training Group, 338th Training Squadron “Dark Knights”, Sailors from CNATTU Keesler, and Marines from MARDET Keesler all running. Even though it was not a competitive event, Airman Jon Dahlheimer, a Carter Lake, Iowa native, arrived to win and ran a time of 16:52.
“I want to recognize the contributions of Aerographer’s Mate 1st Class Richard Martinez, Staff Sgt. Preston Spangler, Staff Sgt. David Ortiz, all the victim advocates at CNATTU Keesler and MARDET Keesler who made this possible,” said Wilson. “Without their help, and the many key players from our partners with the Air Force, this event would not have been successful.”
Like previous years, the chief and first class petty officers associations collected voluntary donations for the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence, a 72-bed facility in Biloxi, Mississippi, which provides shelter, meals, clothing, personal hygiene items, child care, transportation, phone and computer access and a comprehensive array of counseling and support services to victims of domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual assault.
CNATTU Keesler is a training unit of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) located at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. CNATT develops, delivers, and supports aviation technical training at 28 sites located throughout the continental United States and Japan.
CNATT is the largest training center under Naval Education and Training Command, and is a technical training agent for the Naval Aviation Enterprise, an organization designed to advance and sustain naval aviation warfighting capabilities at an affordable cost.
