Tech. Sgt. Joshua Nix, 47th Force Support Squadron NCO in charge of career development, was chosen by wing leadership to be the “XLer” of the week, for the week of Feb. 18, 2019, at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.
The “XLer” award, presented by Col. Lee Gentile, 47th Flying Training Wing commander, is given to those who consistently make outstanding contributions to their unit and the Laughlin mission.
Nix helps Airmen of all ranks, both military and civilian, further their military and career goals through his work at the career development flight.
"You’ve got to lead by example,” Nix said. “That's our next generation of the NCO corps, so I try to cultivate excellence into them, support, mentor and shape them to be the best next generation."
Nix supervised and oversaw the successful completion of 40 Selective Re- enlistment Bonuses valued at approximately $196,000.
"When Laughlin Airmen were reenlisting with SRB’s, we made sure all of those transactions were going through,” Nix said. “We made sure they were updated in a timely manner so Airmen could continuously get paid and also get their benefits on time."
Nix also saved approximately 45 man hours per week by adjusting the walk-in time and appointment time schedule improving engagement with base Airmen.
"I implemented a big change in our career development section where we used to be walk-in hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but changed them to get our mission done more efficiently,” Nix said. “We made our hours by appointment only until 1:30 p.m., but starting at 1:30 p.m. we allow walk-ins so we can now concentrate on our mission with no morning interruptions."
Nix led three Airmen and NCOs in directing approximately 100 permanent change of station orders and approximately 900 formal training orders, making Laughlin the number one for accuracy small base Military Personnel Flight in Air Education and Training Command.
"In my section we cover PCS orders,” Nix said. “We also cover all the pilots whenever they are done here and moving on to their specific aircraft school. We have to make sure all the orders are 100 percent pristine. Right now we are the number 3 in the Air Force amongst 41 MPS and we're the number one base for AETC in all orders being 100 percent correct."
For his guidance of future professionals of the U.S. Air Force, his work saving measures and helping to ensure Laughlin’s MPF remains at the top of AETC, Tech. Sgt. Joshua Nix earned the “XLer of the week”.
