During the two-hour event military spouses were presented Military Spouse Appreciation Day proclamations, various gifts and flowers.

“We felt it extremely important to recognize the military spouses here,” said Stacy Leach, the NAS Pensacola FFSC Work and Family Life Specialist. “Naval Air Station Pensacola is one of the largest facilities in the southeast and and there are so many spouses here. Working together with the NEX and Navy Lodge to help celebrate and recognize the job and sacrifices military spouses have in the United States Armed Forces is important to us.”

Naval Air Station Pensacola Ombudsman Gloria Nettles also attended the event, and stressed that the role spouses have historically played is crucial to the continued success of the U.S. military.

“The spouse has always played a part in ensuring our nation’s service members continue to support and defend our nation,” she said. “Events such as this demonstrate that NAS Pensacola commands are there to provide assistance to not only the service member, but the family they hold dear.”

Military Spouse Appreciation Day, now held annually the Friday before Mother’s Day, is designed to honor military spouses and the important role they play in the success of not only their husband or wife, but in the continued success of the United States’ Armed Forces. First proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in April of 1984, Congress officially made Military Spouse Day a part of National Military Appreciation Month in 1999.

NAS Pensacola, referred to as the "Cradle of Naval Aviation," is designed to support operational and training missions of tenant commands, including Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC), Naval Aviation Schools Command (NASC), the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT), Marine Aviation Training Support Groups (MATSG) 21 and 23 and is the headquarters for Naval Education and Training Command (NETC).
