Safety is an important part of everyday life in the armed forces. One way service members, dependents, civilian employees and contractors who live or work on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River can take part in keeping the installations safe is ensuring their vehicles are registered with the Provost Marshal’s Office.
According to MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJO 5530.25 – Access Control Regulations, motor vehicles owned by persons authorized to drive on Marine Corps installations must be registered at the installation’s Visitor’s Center within 30 days or purchase or arrival. All active duty service members, dependents, civilian employees and contractors are required to register their vehicles regardless of whether they reside on or off base.
“If you do not register your vehicle, you could get a citation,” said Henry Dunston, lead security clerk, Visitor’s Center, MCB Camp Lejeune, “or even get your driving privileges suspended by traffic court depending upon your base driving record.”
Registering your vehicle lets the Provost Marshal’s Office know your vehicle belongs on base and allows them to contact you in case of an emergency.
According to the Provost Marshal’s Office they have had many cases in the past where they’ve had to tow vehicles off base and owners were required to pay excessive towing and storage fees. Having your vehicle registered allows PMO to contact you should they have to move your vehicle unexpectedly.
Vehicle registration can be completed at either the Camp Lejeune Main Gate Visitor’s Center on Holcomb Boulevard, Building 818, or the MCAS New River Main Gate Visitor’s Center on Curtis Road, Building AS-187. The Camp Lejeune Main Gate Visitor’s Center is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The MCAS New River Main Gate Visitor’s Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but is closed on the weekends.
The required documents needed to register your vehicle are: driver’s license, Department of Defense identification card, state vehicle registration and proof of liability insurance. If you are active duty and under the age of 26, you will also need to provide a Drivers Improvement Course certificate. All documents must be original copies, with the exception of your proof of liability insurance.
Insurance on your vehicle must meet the North Carolina minimum coverage of $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage limits.
In addition to registering your vehicles, personnel are also required to register motorcycles. The required documentation for motorcycles includes the all of the above vehicle documentation in addition to Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course certificate, motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license and the motorcycle must be present at the time of registration.
Once your vehicle has been registered on base, the registration does not expire; however, you must unregister your vehicle upon a permanent change of station, termination of employment from the installation or upon sale of your vehicle.
Also, be sure to update your registration with any significant changes or modifications such as change of color, license plate, or changes to your insurance.
According to Dunston, you should keep the paperwork given to you for your base registration readily available for inspection by your leadership or installation law enforcement.
