Building on the momentum of a successful collaborative-design workshop and crowd-sourced challenge focused on Multi-Domain Operations (MDO), AFWERX will host hundreds of problem-solving technologists, military leaders, business representatives, contracting officials, investors, and more at the 2019 Fusion Xperience July 23-24, 2019, at Enclave event center, 5810 South Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, Nev.

“The AFWERX Fusion Xperience is an annual event that focuses on solving real U.S. Air Force problems in a 6- to 18-month window, using Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) products and services that have military applications—often, from non-traditional vendors who may otherwise lack access to or familiarity with military partners,” says AFWERX Vegas Innovation Actualizer Mark Rowland. “We bring all the necessary ideas, people, and funds together under one virtual roof. AFWERX Vegas is a place where the U.S. Air Force comes to do deals.”

Last year’s Fusion Xperience event focused on perimeter security technologies and trends. This year’s focus is Multi-Domain Operations (MDO)—part of a U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense priority to optimize the integration of the United States and its allies’ operations across air, space, land, sea, cyber, and the electromagnetic spectrum.

The goal is also to resolve complicating factors, such as how verified data can be shared and correlated across multiple security levels, as well as geographic and military-service boundaries. The innovative solutions uncovered in this challenge will provide ways for data to be available to all relevant users, and turned into coordinated action in a timely manner.

The 2019 event will feature keynote speakers and panelists from industry, government, academia, and the military. Vice Chief of Staff for the U.S. Air Force Gen. Stephen W. Wilson, a frequent visitor to the AFWERX Vegas hub, will be a featured speaker. Attendees from AFWERX partners at nearby Creech and Nellis Air Force Bases, other U.S. branches and allied armed forces, as well as the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) are also anticipated.

Through various funding streams, including the Small Business Administration’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, AFWERX Fusion Xperience participants will potentially lock-in partners and money toward prototyping, as well as toward enterprise-wide implementation across the Air Force. In the last 12 months alone, AFWERX Vegas has handed out over $10 million in prototype funding to support AFWERX Challenge.

“The crowd-sourced AFWERX Challenge process is unique in that it brings together non-traditional businesses to address specific Air Force problems, while also offering fast access to non-dilutive capital, ” says Air Force Lt. Col. Randy “Laz” Gordon, test and evaluation lead for AFWERX Vegas. “It’s not an incubator in the sense that it doesn’t rely on physical co-location or membership. And it’s not a winner-take-all, XPRIZE-style competition. Instead, every business that attends AFWERX Fusion Xperience is a ‘winner’—because everything and everyone is here, ready to take their products to the next level.”

The AFWERX Vegas Innovation Hub was started in 2017, and is funded by the U.S. Air Force to support outreach to the business and academic communities. The location is one of three AFWERX hubs—the others are in Austin, Texas, and the District of Columbia. Each serves as a nexus for generating and hosting activities—whether on site, online, or on-base—focused on delivering design solutions to Air Force problems faster, more effectively, and more efficiently than in the past.

As envisioned by U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson in 2017, AFWERX is intended to solve some of the toughest challenges that the Air Force faces in an “outside the fence” environment, through innovation and collaboration amongst our nation’s top subject-matter experts. The world is changing quickly—new technologies, new threats, and new opportunities.

AFWERX taps into the power of creativity and empowers intentional innovation that unleashes emergent approaches for the warfighter through a community of intrapreneurs, industry, academia, and non-traditional contributors. AFWERX has the ability to bring together our nation’s best and brightest to collaborate, innovate, fabricate, and present accelerated results to the United States Air Force to better serve our No. 1 customer: the warfighter and operators in the Air Force.
