STEWART AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, N.Y. (May 20, 2019) – The 600,000 daily commuters that travel through Penn Station in New York City each day were greeted by the smiling faces of New York Air National Guardsmen May 17 to recognize Air National Guard Day 2019.

New York City officials drafted a proclamation declaring ANG Day 2019 in order to recognize and support the Air National Guard’s mission, which empowers citizens of the city through world-class training, tuition assistance, and career opportunities.

Col. Michele Kilgore, commander of the 109th Airlift Wing, read the proclamation during a short ceremony, which included a demonstration by the 109th Airlift Wing’s Base Honor Guard.

Kilgore said the event was a way to tell the story of the whole NY Air Guard as opposed to a single unit or career-field.

“Where better to hold and event like this than Penn Station where you have 600,000 people coming through each day and you can brag about all the units instead of just one,” Kilgore said.

Commuters may have noticed something else beginning in April.

The station was covered in Air Guard marketing materials. From banners to electronic signage, it was impossible to look in any direction throughout the terminal and not learn something about the Air Guard.

Senior Master Sgt. Shane Rogers, the advertising marketing superintendent at National Guard Bureau, built the visual media campaign from the ground up.

Rogers said the 438 pieces of artwork throughout the station where put in place to increase awareness for the Air National Guard. Presently, only two percent of the population can describe what the Air Guard does of the top of their heads.

“We wanted to take that awareness to a new level,” Rogers said.

Center to the campaign was the concept of ‘do both.’

“We are the military, but you can still have a civilian career, you can be a student, you can be a stay-at-home mom, you can do so many different things,” Rogers said.

New York has the largest Air Guard force in the nation with five wings and an additional group assigned to the Eastern Air Defense Sector.
