Fort McCoy’s Main Gate was closed in mid-March for construction that will continue through November. Work on the project is well under way, said Ken Green with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office at Fort McCoy.

The design and construction of this project is being handled by the Army Corp of Engineers, Omaha District, Green said.

“The project was awarded to contractor Perimeter Security Partners of Brentwood, Tenn., at an amount of approximately $3.2 million,” Green said.

As of May 10, the project was about 20 percent complete with work on new sidewalks and a parking area, Green said.

Demolition of old active vehicle barriers continues.

The new sidewalks and parking area is located next to the Fort McCoy Visitor Control Center, building 35, and will allow for better parking space and accessibility.

New active vehicle barriers will meet the requirements for standoff distances, required by mandated regulations.

During the construction period, traffic has been rerouted through Gate 1, which is the old Main Gate for the installation and located less than half a mile west of the new Main Gate.

Traffic-flow patterns at Gate 1 are marked to make it easier for drivers to understand how to enter and leave the installation, according to the Directorate of Emergency Services.

Building 35 remains open and accessible and will stay open throughout the construction period.

The center is located next to the current Main Gate and assists customers with installation passes, military ID cards, military retiree support, and more.
