Airmen from the 100th Maintenance Squadron electrical and environmental section maintain and repair aircraft power systems, and replenish aircrew life support gear while ensuring the systems continue to function properly.

At RAF Mildenhall, the E and E Airmen either work on the flightline with the 100th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, or in the back shop with the 100th MXS. The back shop is made up of different maintenance shops which focus on inspections and major maintenance tasks that only they can accomplish.

The 100th MXS E and E section is the only E and E back shop assigned to RAF Mildenhall, giving the shop the sole responsibility of supporting the entire base, including tenant units such as the 352nd Special Operations Wing and the 95th Reconnaissance Squadron.

“In the back shop, we take care of equipment that supports the aircraft and conduct isochronal inspections for 15 of the aircraft we have on base,” said Tech. Sgt. Mark Lipumano, 100th MXS E and E systems section chief. “As far as equipment goes, we take care of batteries for the CV-22s, KC-135s, C-130s and RC-135 Rivet Joints along with the liquid oxygen carts we get from cryogenics that allows breathing capabilities at high altitudes.”

With all the support E and E provides, they have a vital role in the mission on base.

“Our job is essential to the mission, starting with the batteries we provide support to all the aircraft on base,” said Senior Airman Austin Good, 100th MXS E and E systems journeyman. “We also assist the flightline E and E with anything they may need, for instance if they’re stretched thin due to discrepancies with an aircraft we would then go out and troubleshoot the aircraft, see what’s wrong with it, order the parts and fix it.”

The shop has a wide range of responsibilities which allows Airmen to be flexible and have different experiences on the job.

“I like the variety of work we see in E and E,” said Good. “With our job, we sometimes get to work on things we haven’t done before. One that comes to mind is the controls for the CV-22s rebuilding and replacing it, which is pretty cool since it’s not something we get to do very often.”

Lipumano added his perspective as a section chief overseeing the E and E Airmen who are able to accomplish a variety of different tasks.

“As a section chief, the best part of the job is getting to see the Airmen progress, learn and pick things up. Seeing them win awards and highlighting the Airmen for their accomplishments, which directly leads to seeing aircraft launch,” said Lipumano.

Team Mildenhall is the backbone to force projection by forward-basing KC-135, RC-135, MC-130J and CV-22 aircraft and maintaining Air Mobility Command in-transit cargo capabilities, which would not be possible without the devotion the E and E Airmen give to the mission.
