U.S. Marines with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing participated in Bold Quest 19.1 at Rovaniemi Air Base, Finland, May 21-XX, 2019.

Bold Quest 19.1 is a joint and multinational capability-assessment and demonstration event taking place in Finland. The event involves the United States, European partner nations and allies.

“Every country can have it's own training objective,” said U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Roy Nicka, the commanding officer of VMFA-251. “However, for all the participants, the main training objective is interoperability.”

During the event, each country worked with one another and used their resources to demonstrate and assess their warfighting capabilities and interoperability as a coalition force.

According to Nicka, VMFA-251’s main objective was providing close-air support involving live ordnance.

“We are executing combat aircraft loading-area operations, meaning we are using live ordnance and providing close-air support for the joint terminal air controllers on the deck from our international partners.”

The U.S. Marine Corps’ participation in Bold Quest 19.1 ensured close-air support interoperability and enabled the Marine Corps to globally deploy its forces alongside partner nations and allies.

“If we were ever needed to be back on the deck in this theater, this exercise allowed us to learn how to make that happen fast, and be able to start executing flight operations with live ordnance within 24 hours,” said Nicka. “The Marines have been performing outstanding.”
