Maxwell AFB, Ala. – U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Tim Horn, DTRA Command Senior Enlisted Leader, spoke to the Air Force’s newest First Sergeants during a graduation ceremony, May 3, 2019. In the Air Force, a First Sergeant is a special duty held by a senior enlisted member of a unit, who works directly for the commander. First Sergeants, or “First Shirts” are charged with maintaining mission readiness, morale and quality-of-life issues for the unit.
Horn visited the schoolhouse where he mentored the students, discussing leadership in non-standard environments and what makes a great First Sergeant instead of a merely good one.
“Sometimes we need called out; and sometimes we need to call out others,” said Horn. “As the First Sergeant, you’ll be put in this position – you may be the only one that doesn’t walk by a situation in silence. We owe our Airmen feedback…even when it’s a bit of tough love.”
