AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy --- U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 31st Fighter Wing, Aviano Air Base, Italy attended the Florence American Cemetery Memorial Day event on May 27, 2019.
A formation of Aviano Airmen traveled to Florence to honor the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who have given their lives for their country.
“It was a humbling experience,” said Staff Sgt. Erron Farrow, 31st Fighter Wing NCO in charge of mishap prevention. “And the best way to express my gratitude for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. “
Within the Florence American Cemetery, 4,398 service members have been laid to rest. On Memorial Day, we pay solemn tribute to their ultimate sacrifice.
U.S. Air Force General Tod D. Wolters, commander of U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, was a guest speaker during the day of commemoration to honor the lives and legacy of fallen U.S. service members.
“To the fallen, to their families left behind,” said Wolters. “On this Memorial Day, know that we remember and are so deeply thankful that these warriors lived.“
The Florence American Cemetery Memorial Day event honored fallen U.S. Service members and marked the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Florence. World War II forged partnerships and reinforced trans-Atlantic bonds that remain to this day.
