Media representatives are invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new consolidated support facility at the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa.
The event is planned for Saturday June 1, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. at the Air National Guard base located at the Sioux City airport.
Construction on the new 37,000-square-foot, $12.4 million dollar facility began in the fall of 2017. Now that it is complete the building will house the unit’s clinic, food services, communications function and public affairs office. The facility will be used daily by full time employees of the Iowa Guard and on training weekends it will accommodate nearly 500 people consolidating several areas under one roof.
The new building is replacing two aging buildings that were constructed in the 1960’s and 70’s, It is a modern, energy efficient space that has been designed specifically for the military functions who will use the facility.
One building that has already been torn down was originally used as the base supply building and was being used as the clinic and dining facility. The other building being vacated was originally constructed as a jet engine repair shop, but most recently it was being used as the base communications facility. The new building is designed to meet the latest anti-terrorism and force protection standards while also offering improved work space. The facility has modern, high efficiency mechanical systems as well as LED lighting throughout the entire structure.
The contract for the facility was awarded to Minneapolis, MN based Opus Design Build, L.L.C. who is the designer and builder.
