    1st Marine Logistics Group

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Marines and Sailors with 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, participated in required training for the nearing deployment to Afghanistan near Las Pulgas, April 4 — 9.

"We conducted our pre-combat training to make sure the Marines have the skills to deploy that's required by the Marine Corps," said Gunnery Sgt. Clifford J. Williford, equipment chief of Engineer Equipment Platoon, Support Company, 7th ESB. "It gives the service members the basic fundamentals to what they'll maybe experience in combat."

Service members performed exercises ranging from the combat marksmanship program to the Humvee Egress Assistance Trainer. The training increased the knowledge of 7th ESB service members and provided unit cohesion.

"During the field training exercises, Marines pulled together and enjoyed their time," said Chief Warrant Officer 3 James R. Newton, commander of Engineer Equipment Platoon. "They really focused on the basics of being a Marine."

The Marines received training during the field exercise to educate them on the upcoming deployment.

During the casualty evacuation class, Marines were taught the proper procedures for carrying wounded service members to a safe area where they can be transported to receive medical attention.

"Marines will have the necessary training so when they get to Afghanistan, it won't be the first time they'll experience the field environment," said Newton, 36, Austin. "In a moment's notice, every Marine, regardless of their military occupation specialty, needs to be able to carry out the roles of a basic rifleman."

Marines within the unit who have already deployed shared their experiences about how missions are conducted in the Middle East. Williford, 33, Dorris, Calif., stated that the non-commissioned officers did an outstanding job and without them, none of this training would have been able to happen.

7th ESB is scheduled to participate in more occupationally-oriented training in the future at Camp Roberts, Calif.

"We're going up there for a 30-day exercise to conduct more MOS training to prepare the Marines for Afghanistan," Newton said.

During the field training exercise at Camp Roberts, service members will be using their job specialty knowledge to fix roadways, water and electrical lines, and shooting ranges.

Newton stated that this will be the last big practice before the big game ... Afghanistan.
