CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan –Members of the local and military community gathered for a beach cleanup May 31 at Tropical Beach on Okinawa.
The cleanup was hosted by 3rd Dental Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group.
“We hosted this clean up because we wanted to bring various units together and to give an opportunity for senior enlisted members to interact with their junior enlisted, this gives us a chance to mentor outside of the office and do something good for the local community,” said Chief Petty Officer Amanda Derequito, a hospital corpsman with the battalion.
Beach cleanups are held often by various units across III Marine Expeditionary Force, not only to clean up the environment, but to also show the local community that personnel assigned to Okinawa truly care about their surroundings.
“We really want our neighbors to know that we care about what they have given to us. We want to take care of the island and help in any way possible,” said Seaman Alexa Laygo, a hospital corpsman with 3rd Dental Battalion.
If you are interested in participating in the next beach cleanup, you can contact your local Single Marine Program.
