FOB WARRIOR, Iraq -- Eighty-seven Soldiers from the 116th Brigade Combat Team's Task Force 2-116 Armor were recognized for combat achievement at an outdoor awards ceremony held at Forward Operating Base Warrior October 8.

The ceremony included awarding two Purple Hearts, nine Combat Infantryman Badges (CIBs), eight Combat Medic Badges (CMBs) and 70 Combat Action Badges (CABs). The two Purple Heart recipients also earned CABs.

"It's because of great soldiers like you'sacrificing for your country'that we live in freedom," said 116th BCT Commander Brig. Gen. Alan Gayhart to the formation after personally pinning on the awards and congratulating each recipient.

The Purple Heart is awarded to soldiers who die or are wounded by hostile fire. Combat badges are awarded to soldiers who perform their duties while under enemy fire. Soldiers trained in the infantry specialty receive the CIB, those trained as medical specialists receive the CMB and those trained in other specialties receive the CAB.

As part of the 116th BCT, TF 2-116 Armor has taken the lead in maintaining security and preparing Iraqi security forces in Kirkuk City since taking responsibility for the area this past February. The 116th BCT's four-part mission in the larger Kirkuk Province includes maintaining security, assisting Iraq's new government, supporting economic development and facilitating communications.

The 116th BCT is comprised of headquarters and staff sections, two armor battalions, a mechanized infantry battalion, a support battalion, a field artillery battalion, an engineer battalion, and various intelligence, signal, and specialized units. The 116th BCT is one of several Army National Guard units deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III.
