MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU, Romania -- The Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, and his wife, Leah Esper, visited Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base June 3, 2019, to observe and show support for joint and multinational military operations in the European theater. During their visit, Mrs. Esper focused on learning about the Soldiers’ wellbeing by visiting MWR facilities, inspecting living conditions and speaking with them to gain a better understanding of their needs.
While the secretary focused his time with high ranking officials, Mrs. Esper took time to speak with enlisted Soldiers and hear their questions and concerns.
"We are here to see the support that the Soldiers have outside the mission itself," Mrs. Esper said.
Military families and their needs are part of Mrs. Espers’ top priorities. These are issues that Mrs. Esper relates to, as she was a military spouse for many years after meeting her husband while he was a second lieutenant at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. They are now coming up on their thirtieth anniversary.
In order to help make a difference with her husband, Mrs. Esper has travelled with him to roughly 40 different military installations, bringing certain issues to the attention of her husband as she engages with other military family members. Spouse employment and child care are two challenges for military families that she has helped her husband shed more light on.
"Military families live as a team," Mrs. Esper said. "When he took the job, we decided that if we are going to do this we are going to do this as a team."
Secretary Esper and his wife both expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit with the Soldiers stationed at MK Air Base and hope to use the feedback and information they received to help improve the Army’s modernization efforts.
"Thanks to all the Soldiers and families for what they do and the sacrifices that they make," Mrs. Esper said. "It doesn't go unnoticed."
