Staff Sgt. Titus Kamau led the Army to the Gold Medal in the 2009 Armed Forces Soccer Championship at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, in February.
"I love soccer," said Kamau.
"He's a great Soldier," said Agustin Mendez, Kamau's coach and fellow non-commissioned officer for both the All-Army and U.S. Armed Forces teams. He said it takes more than athletic ability to make the team. "To represent the Army, you have to be a good Soldier. We're Soldiers first," Mendez said.
The coach said Kamau, a forward, is very fast and his technique makes him an asset. "He's in the top 2 percent who play his position in speed; that's running with the ball," Mendez said.
Playing a 3-4-3 formation against the Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy teams, Kamau and his teammates took first place in the Armed Forces Soccer Championship on Feb. 7 after a series of six, 90-minute games in six days.
