The 240th Composite Supply Company of Baumholder, Germany, and Alpha Company, 601st Aviation Support Battalion of Ft. Riley, Kansas, have come together to provide purified water to nearly 900 service members who are taking part in exercise STRIKE BACK 19 at Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria.
The two units will be working around the clock to ensure that hundreds of gallons of water are ready and available for use for laundry services, cooking, showering, and drinking water at any given time.
“The Lightweight Water Purification system can produce up to 125 gallons of purified water per hour. The LWP is typically used to provide water at a company level,” said Sgt. Nondi McLeod, a water purification specialist with the 240th CSC. McLeod added that being a vital member of the team during STRIKE BACK 19 and potentially saving lives through hydration is something that she takes a lot of pride in.
While the LWP is purifying water, it will go through 10 different filters to assure that the water is as clean as possible. After the water is run through, the entire LWP is filtered into water bags where it will remain until it is used. While the water is stored in the water bags it is tested every hour on the hour to ensure that it remains potable.
The Tactical Water Purification System has much larger purification capabilities. Similar to the LWP, the TWPS uses a 10-filter reverse osmosis purification process and can purify up to 1,500 gallons of purified water per hour.
“It’s mainly about filters with this system because it can purify any type of water no matter how grimy it is. No matter how dirty it is,” said Staff Sgt. Herbert Williams, also a water purification specialist with Alpha Co.
The average person uses approximately 7.5 gallons of water per person per day. During a training exercise as large as STRIKE BACK 19, it is imperative to be able to produce large quantities of water in a relatively short time.
“While it may be easy to overlook something as seemingly minor as clean water, the job of a water purification specialist is extremely important to any mission,” said Williams.
STRIKE BACK 19 is a multinational exercise hosted by the Bulgarian Armed Forces from June 6-20, 2019. STRIKE BACK 19 is designed to increase capabilities and interoperability with Bulgarian, Albanian, Greek, North Macedonian and U.S. Troops.
