KOROSHEGY TRAINING AREA, Hungary - The U.S. Army and Hungarian Defense Forces (HDF) partnered together for a live fire training exercise as a part of Breakthrough 2019, June 12, 2019, Koroshegy, Hungary.
“We are grateful to our strong NATO ally Hungary for hosting this outstanding training event,” said Lt. Gen. Christopher Cavoli, commander, U.S. Army Europe. “ We appreciate the coordination and planning conducted by all of our allies and partners in the Balkan peninsula that ensured the success of this exercise.”
This exercise aims to identify the capabilities and limitations of the U.S. Army and HDF on a tactical level while in theater. Firing systems are being tested by executing multi-echelon interoperability between both the U.S. and Hungarian military forces. This provides an opportunity to observe synchronization and execution of both manned and digital firing upon specified targets within a tactical environment.
Breakthrough 2019 promotes regional stability and security, while increasing readiness.
“We are strengthening partner capabilities and fostering trust,” Lt. Gen. Cavoli said. “Our combined training grants opportunity to greatly improve interoperability among participating allies and partners such as the HDF,”
U.S. presence is expected to continue in fostering commitment to security throughout the Black Sea and Balkan regions. Training with regional allies and partners makes the U.S. and its allies prepared to respond to emerging threats.
By allowing allies and partners to connect; personally, professionally, technically and tactically a stronger, more capable military allegiance is formed, resulting in resilience during times of crisis.
“It’s very important, the cooperation between the Americans and the Hungarian Defense Forces.” said Brig. Gen. George Sandor, Artillery Battalion, Hungarian Defense Forces.
Lt. Gen. Cavoli said that no nation can confront today’s challenges alone, Breakthrough 2019 demonstrates the U.S. resolve to stand side-by-side with our allies and partners.
The interoperability of Breakthrough 2019 demonstrates the multi-domain, realistic and challenging exercises orchestrated in order to train how these armies expect and anticipate to fight.
“Breakthrough 2019 showcases the U.S. Army’s ‘Total Army’ concept,” said Lt. Gen. Cavoli. “The exercise brings together the Ohio Army National Guard and other National Guard units from four other states to exercise with U.S. Army Europe’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment. Breakthrough demonstrates our ability to conduct combined field artillery operations with the Hungarian Defense Forces, which builds our interoperability and collective readiness.”
Exercises like Breakthrough are successful because of the ability to move units and their equipment from the United States, offloading them into European ports, and then move them quickly throughout the region. A strong NATO ally like Hungary is essential in maintaining U.S. Army readiness across the world.
Lt. Gen. Cavoli said we are grateful, and appreciative for the coordination and planning conducted by all of our allies and partners in the Balkan peninsula that ensured the success of this exercise. No nation can confront today’s security challenges alone. Breakthrough 2019 demonstrates U.S. resolve to stand side-by-side with our NATO allies and partners.
Brig. Gen. Sandor said, Breakthrough 2019 is very useful, that this exercise provides an opportunity to sort through some of the differences between Hungarian and American military weapons resulting in a more unified tactical capacity between our two countries.
