CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox honored Master Sgt. Shandrel Daniels, Assistant Inspector General, 85th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command, as the ‘Hero of the Game’ during their home game, June 11, 2019, playing the Washington Nationals at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Daniels walked onto the field, during the third inning, to a crowd of nearly 17,000 cheering spectators. White Sox third base coach Nick Capra shook hands with Daniels and presented her with a commemorative coin and words of appreciation for her service.
“It was great. I really enjoyed it,” said Daniels. “It gives you a rush being out there on the field seeing people wave at you. This is the first time (for me) doing something like this at a baseball game.”
Daniels attended the game with her boyfriend, Mike Herring, who watched her receive the honor from his seat.
“I’m proud of her. A lot of years of hard work paying off,” he said.
Along with her recognition, Daniels reflected as she was honored ahead of the U.S. Army’s 244th birthday.
“To be able to celebrate the Army for 244 years is an honor because other Soldiers paved the way for us to be here today,” said Daniels.
The 31-year Army Reserve veteran, with two deployments supporting Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield in 1991 and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012, comes from a family with a long history of service to America.
“My grandfather served in the Army,” said Daniels. “My dad served in the Army. I have uncles and cousins that have served as well as my sister and brother.”
