10th Mountain Division Medical Support Training Center Soldiers hosted an Emergency Medical Service Day, June 8th, at Fort Drum, N.Y.

EMS Day was implemented to show the appreciation Army medics have for the work of local emergency responders, and to show local responders what life is like for Army medics, showcasing the Army medical capabilities.

“This training is important because it is the Fort Drum Soldiers’ way of giving back to the community,” said Staff Sgt. George Tolentino, the NCOIC of the Fort Drum Medical Support Training Center. “The civilian agencies help service 10th Mountain Soldiers, and this is one of our ways of saying ‘thank you’ for providing us with these great services.”

The day began with a classroom session, an emergency helicopter demonstration, and a medevac trauma capabilities brief.

After the class there was hands-on medical training using the MSTC’s SimMan3Gs, which are life-like mannequins that move, drip blood, and simulate real-life patients.

EMS Day helps to illustrate the professional similarities between civilian and military emergency medical services.

“A day like today strengthens the bond between the military and the civilian community because civilian agencies don’t normally get the chance to come on post and see what we do,” said Tolentino. “We have the medical link between soldiers and civilians, but we don’t have the details of what each other does.”

Tolentino wants to continue creating programs like EMS Day at the MSTC, and further establish the relationship between Fort Drum and the local community.

“Events like today are why the Fort Drum Medical Simulation Training Center is unique,” said Tolentino. “There aren’t too many other Medical Simulation Training Centers that reach out to the community like we do. We service law enforcement, we’ve had Watertown SWAT come out, and other agencies come out and train with us.”
