KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan and coalition forces killed two militants and detained three suspects during operations overnight to dismantle Taliban and Haqqani networks in Oruzgan and Lowgar provinces, respectively.

In Tarin Kowt District, Oruzgan province, approximately 125 kilometers north of Kandahar city, a combined Afghan-coalition force, using information provided by intelligence sources, maneuvered to an isolated area to capture Taliban militants residing for the night at a temporary camp. As forces neared the camp, the two armed men threatened the patrol and were engaged with small arms fire, resulting in both men killed. Forces found multiple pistols, one AK-47 assault rifle, chest racks and ammunition.

No women or children were present and no Afghan or coalition forces were injured in the brief engagement.

In a separate operation in Baraki Barak District, Lowgar province, approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Kabul, Afghan and coalition forces searched several compounds to locate and capture Haqqani network operatives connected to ambushes, kidnappings and improvised explosive device operations in Lowgar province.

Afghan forces, who led the effort to call for residents to exit their homes peacefully, resolved a potentially dangerous situation when a man did not comply with the initial calls to exit. Afghan forces conveyed the seriousness of the situation to the man, persuading him to come out on his own. There were no shots fired and no collateral damage to any buildings. Three suspects were detained.

Nine adults and four children were present and protected, with three suspects detained for questioning.
