VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Fitness representatives from Rockwell Hall Gymnasium at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek presented awards to participants in the "Biggest Loser" contest, April 23.

Cindy Pultz and Reanel Pedro of team "2 Peas in a Pod" won first place with a total of 36 pounds lost.

"We gave each other a lot of motivation to lose the weight while our husbands have been gone on deployment with the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower," said Pultz. "We ran at least 30 minutes on a treadmill and did a lot of cardio exercises Monday through Friday since the start of this competition."

The "Biggest Loser" contest began on Jan. 20. Jennifer Slater, a Rockwell Hall Gym worker and fitness coordinator for the contest, took ideas from the "Biggest Loser" television show and placed flyers within the gym for participants to sign up.

"I wanted to get people who were already in the gym working out to try out new ways of exercising," said Slater. "I made myself available to help those who wanted to lead a healthier lifestyle."

Fitness leaders noticed results in their participants toward the beginning of the contest.

"They put in a lot of hard work to look their best from start to finish of this contest," said fitness leader Danny Parker. "At the end, we had a good turn out with outstanding results."

The total number of pounds lost from all participants in this year's contest was 129.

"Losing weight is hard for us at our age," said Pedro. "We're not done yet. Once you start getting into a routine, you just don't want to stop."
