As threats change over time, the ability to adapt becomes the difference between success and failure. To remain the world’s preeminent air, space and cyberspace fighting force requires the ability to rapidly innovate and prevent the threats that may arise in the future.
As part of the Air Force’s Squadron Innovation Fund, leadership form the 6th Air Mobility Wing at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, hosted the second annual Fuel Tank competition March 15, 2019, where Airmen pitched their innovative ideas to improve processes, training, and equipment, and thus, effectiveness and readiness.
From developing a master fitness course to revamping the base access list procedures to new equipment for the KC-135 Stratotanker, this year, 12 ideas were pitched to the commander, vice commander and command chief. After listening to the pitches, leadership then decided which ideas to fund. Other ideas selected include the emotional intelligence 2.0 course, customer service training, digital in-processing platform for civilians and a cost-saving measure for landscaping.
The winning ideas were granted a total of $209,000 to implement the ideas, with the stipulation that a detailed, final plan of implementation be provided to the commander in the coming months.
“We often have ideas that we would like to implement or create, but often have to go through long processes to implement an improvement,” said Tech. Sgt. Noel Gamez, who pitched a ride-share application to help minimize drunk driving. “Fuel Tank is a forum that allows you to present an idea and see immediate results such as funding or support to help make your idea obtainable.”
Moving forward, Airmen are encouraged to come up with innovative ideas to solve problems.
“I was blown away by the ideas,” said Col. Stephen Snelson, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander. “We have to rely on our Airmen to be innovative and come up with new ideas and new ways to use technologies that not in a million years would we have ever imagined.”
