U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The career assistance advisors from Colorado’s Front Range hosted an Airman Professional Enhancement Seminar June 14, at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado.
Approximately 25 Airmen attended the one-day PES, which was designed specifically for Airmen by a team of non-commissioned officers.
“The course is comprised of topics appropriate for our Airmen that will expand both knowledge and skill of those attending,” said Senior Master Sgt. Paula Barkhauer, USAFA career assistance advisor. “Some of the things we teach them are time management, effective communication, progressive discipline, airman comprehensive assessment and MyVector/virtual Air Force.”
This seminar allows Airmen to step away from the work center and take a day to focus on themselves.
“Our Airmen rarely have an opportunity to attend professional development designed specifically for them at any point between First Term Airmen’s Course and Airmen Leadership School,” Barkhauer said. “I believe it’s safe to say that the majority of the professional development courses cater to NCOs, often focusing on supervisory responsibilities and leadership.”
The seminar included panels and an open forum. Organizers hope the event inspired those attending to become leaders among Airmen.
“The flight chief panel was comprised of Senior NCO flight chiefs from medical, security forces and finance,” Barkauer said. “It gives the Airmen a chance to ask the flight chiefs things they wanted to know but never asked.”
The Airmen were also given the opportunity to express their viewpoints on some of the subjects.
“We had open communication with a Staff Sgt. who asked us what we wanted from our supervisors,” said Airman 1st Class Andrew Bertain, 21st Space Wing Public Affairs photojournalist. “The interactive part is great because we were able to explain not only what we want from our supervisors, but what our supervisors want from us.”
The Airmen had the chance to talk to other Airmen from the Front Range, gaining a wider view of the Air Force. The course will arm them with more information and a broader network of peers and mentors so they can reach across for input, assistance and information when they need it.
“I hope the Airmen took advantage of this amazing opportunity we have being stationed in an area with such a diverse population of Airmen,” said Barkhauer. “I also hope that at least one lesson hits home with each Airman so that they are inspired to be better in at least one meaningful way.”
