Members of the Sembawang military community participated in a Kick Off for Summer event at the Terror Club June 7, 2019.
The four-hour event gathered more than 50 military and civilian families to play softball, enjoy barbecued food and watch the feature film, The Sandlot. During the event, Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) representatives from the Singapore Area Coordinator, discussed planned activities for the upcoming summer months. Future events include a summer reading program, babysitting basics program, and a Camp Learn Explore Achieve and Discover (L.E.A.D.) program. For MWR, the event was a great way to strengthen community ties.
"Today's event to promote summer involvement for the community and fellowship and bonding," said Alice Sen, MWR Community Recreation Assistant specialist. "While this is a small community, not everyone may know each other so when you get people together they can mingle share information."
Meanwhile, for those who took part in the softball game, the field time was more than just for sport it was an opportunity for younger children to get their feet wet in learning about organized sports.
"I think today's game was really fun because it was great getting the younger kids out here," Sydney Dumke, a recent graduate of the Singapore American School. "I've loved softball for years and I'm glad to see other kids are taking an interest in it."
