Full Steam Ahead for Quad Cities Navy Week

The U.S. Navy is visiting the Quad Cities, Iowa area for Navy Week, June 24 to 30.

Throughout the week, Sailors from various Navy units, including the oldest warship afloat USS Constitution, the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), the littoral combat ship USS Sioux City (LCS 11), and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group (EODGRU) 1, will be showing the capabilities of the Navy and engaging with the community.

"Navy Week is an opportunity to showcase what Sailors are doing here in Rock Island and across the globe," said Lt. Cmdr. Brian Wilson, a naval aviator and commanding officer of Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Rock Island. Wilson first moved to the Quad City area in 1993 when his father was the commanding officer of NOSC Rock Island. "The Navy is proud to be here demonstrating how we support the community at home and abroad."

Rear Adm. Will Pennington, director of the Global Integration and Engagement Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and an Iowa native, will be participating in various ceremonies and meeting with local business, civic, education and government leaders.

“It is always a pleasure to return home to the Quad City area and a privilege to represent our Navy to the local community,” said Pennington. “Despite the distance from each coast, the area has a strong legacy of both business and personnel support to our naval forces.”

Sailors from USS The Sullivans will also visit the hometown of their ship's namesake, Waterloo. The ship was named for the five Sullivan brothers who all served and perished on the same ship during World War II.

The week culminates with the headlining performance by the Navy's Blue Angels at the Quad City Air Show at Davenport Municipal Airport.

This will be the fourth time the Quad Cities has hosted a Navy week.

Since 2005, the Navy Week program has served as the Navy's principal outreach effort in the areas of the country without a significant naval presence. More than 220 Navy Weeks have been held in 76 different U.S. cities.
