Softball is not only a sport, but it's also a way for Marines to build camaraderie.

Motor Transportation Platoon Grease Monkeys added another win to their undefeated eight-win season when they put a 13 — 2 smack down on the 7th Engineer Support Battalion Ruff Ridersm, April 20, at the Naval Hospital softball field here.

"It's good to see the Marines getting together and having fun because the battalion just returned from a deployment in September," said Master Sgt. Alan Reid, family readiness officer, 7th ESB, 1st Marine Logistics Group. "It also gives the Marines a break from the upcoming deployment training."

The Marines maintained a professional atmosphere while having a fun and competitive time during the game by not heckling the batters and pitchers.

"Playing softball helps build teamwork and is a morale booster for the shop," said Cpl. Matthew L. Garcia, 24, La Junta, Colo., motor transportation mechanic, Motor Transportation Platoon, Support Co., 7th ESB.

Reid, 42, Cleveland, stated that the softball games definitely build camaraderie and a friendly rivalry between the companies. Both 7th ESB teams have a good record in the league.

Every team in the softball league plays roughly two games a week within their division. The scarlet, gold and blue divisions consist of 34 teams throughout the base. The Grease Monkeys have not lost a game yet this season.

"The softball season is going extremely well because they're 8 — 0," Reid said. "They have a legitimate shot at the championship title."

If the Grease Monkeys keep up their undefeated record, they'll make it to the playoffs in June with their fans next to them all the way to the end.

"Playing softball definitely brings up the morale when Marines from the shop come out to watch the game," said Cpl. Chris M. Dunay, tool room non-commissioned officer, Motor Transportation Maintenance Platoon, Support Co.

The Marines spend a lot of time together, be it working at their shop or playing on the softball field.

"I'm not the greatest player on the team, but I enjoy playing softball," said Dunay, 21, Houston. "I have a great team."

If everything goes as planned for their upcoming game on April 27, the Grease Monkeys will be on step closer to becoming the champions of Camp Pendleton's softball league.
