Alternate gets call to be on Team Army days before Warrior Games
By MaryTherese Griffin, Army Warrior Care and Transition

TAMPA, Fla. -- Master Sgt. Cinnamon Wright competed at Fort Bliss to be on Team Army back in March. She didn’t quite make the team selected to participate in the 2019 Department of Defense Warrior Games in Tampa, Florida but selected as an alternate. She didn’t wish any ill will on her fellow Soldiers but she knows stuff could happen and someone might have to drop. That drop happened and she did get the call.

“That was something else!” said Wright. “I was really honored to be an alternate but I was getting a little bummed out the closer we got that I didn’t get the call from the team - but low and behold three days before the departure for Tampa I GOT THE CALL!”

Naturally she had to kick it into high gear to get ready to join the team in Tampa. This Army Nurse who worked with Infantry units on deployments had neck, shoulder and spine injuries from riding in a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle. Part of her therapy to recover and overcome since joining the Fort Campbell, Kentucky Warrior Transition Battalion last November is swimming and rowing. She is a good swimmer and a good rower. She knew she could compete in those events no problem, but she also had to be ‘Gumby’ and bend a little to fill the slot. “So…when you get here as an alternate they put you in a sport that you’re filling for that person who didn’t make it - so field was my first event and I had never trained in field.” She literally had a crash course in discus and shotput.

“I got a Bronze in discus and about the only thing I can say about the shot put is, well, I almost hit the score keeper with it,” she said with a laugh.

She captured two silver medals for rowing in the one and four minute competition. “I’m very happy with how I did, both of my competitions were a little better than how I did at Army Trials so I was absolutely happy. I got better and that’s huge!”

Wright will compete in swimming on Saturday.
