Base children had the opportunity to played football with Marquise Goodwin, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, during a youth football event June 18-19 at Travis AFB.
The youth football camp was ran by G3 ProCamps, Proctor & Gamble and the Defense Commissary Agency.
“This event was put together to give military kids a chance to feel appreciated, since any one of them can be without a parent for an extended amount of time,” said Craig James, G3 ProCamps director. “We had pro athlete Marquise Goodwin and coaches teach the kids offensive, quarterback and defensive skills.”
Goodwin and the coaches may have been there to help children progress their football skills, but making sure they had a good time was the camp’s top priority.
“It’s not about how good the kids are at football; it’s about making sure everyone respects each other and learns the value of teamwork while having fun,” Goodwin said.
Over the course of this two-day event, about 70 children participated in the youth football camp.
“I had so much fun learning how to catch better and how to get around the blocking players,” said Kendrick, son of Master Sgt. Delorean Lomax, 60th Surgical Operations Squadron medical technician. “I’m so happy I got to play with Marquise Goodwin.”
With how happy the children were to play with a pro athlete, it’s no wonder why Goodwin enjoys teaching and playing football with children.
“I really love kids, so this is something I’m really passionate about,” Goodwin said. “I didn’t get the chance to attend a fun camp when I was their age, so it means the world to me to be out here with them and play some good old fashioned football. Plus, it’s fun for me to teach these kids because half of them may not even know who I am, so when we laugh together, run plays together and have an overall good time it’s authentic.”
Thanks to events like the youth football camp, celebrities like Goodwin are able to come out and spend time with military families.
“Campers not only get to meet NFL players, have fun and learn about football, but they also learn valuable life skills about teamwork.” said Tracie Russ, Defense Commissary Agency’s director of sales.
Before Goodwin left, he had some words of encouragement.
“Remember kids, the rewards last much longer than the pain, so shoot for the stars and don’t settle for less,” he said.
