NAPLES, Italy — Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, Italy, completed the installation of intelligent mail lockers (IML) on the Support Site installation, June 26.
NSA Naples, one of the first naval bases to install IML, distributed the first packages through the IML on the same day of the equipment installation.
Tim Callahan, the NSA Naples postal supervisor, said that the base selected Support Site, an NSA Naples installation in Gricignano di Aversa, as the site for the installation due to it being the location for base housing and the larger personnel population onboard the site.
When offered the chance to install the IML onboard NSA Naples, Callahan accepted the opportunity.
“The NSA Naples postal community is constantly striving to improve and develop new ways to better serve the active duty and [Department of Defense] families and personnel stationed in Naples,” said Sgt. Ryan Harp, an NSA Naples Support Site postal clerk. “When the opportunity presented itself to request the lockers, which would increase the hours of delivery to customers, the postal [supervisor] began developing a plan on acquiring the new equipment.”
The IML will help customers by increasing the available time for package retrieval from the Support Site post office. The packages scanned into the lockers will be available 24/7.
“The customer will not be required to wait in line or come to the post office during operating hours,” said Callahan. “Additionally, the post office will have less mail on the shelves and less customers waiting in line to pick up packages.”
Enhancing the efficiency and readiness of the base postal system is one of the benefits of the IML, said Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Bala Ravi, an NSA Naples Support Site postal clerk.
“The advantages of having the intelligent mail lockers: it cuts down our customer waiting time, increases productivity of our post office by being more time efficient, and helps us to be more accurate when issuing our customers their packages,” said Ravi. “NSA Naples is one of the biggest bases around the [European] theater, with a lot of family members, and a high percentage of mail is processed through at our site. The benefits of having these lockers at our site is the simple and effective performance it provides to both our customers and the postal clerks.”
The selection of packages for the IML is based on the size of the package and locker availability.
Customers will be alerted to the arrival of a package to the IML through the same email notification method that was used previously.
The training for the postal clerks to operate the IML system was a one-day, hands-on event held at the Support Site post office. Further training will be developed and conducted as updates arrive for the new equipment.
The NSA Naples postal workers are dedicated to improving their procedures for the customers, said Ravi.
“Our post office and our postal site is one of the hardest and most efficient work centers I have ever worked at,” said Ravi. “We are constantly optimizing the way we go about our business every day to give better customer service than they have ever experienced before.”
NSA Naples is an operational ashore base that enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to be where they are needed, when they are needed to ensure security and stability in Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia.
