FORT HOOD, Texas - For the third year in a row, the Killeen Armed Services YMCA conducted the Mud Run with support from Soldiers, family members and civilian volunteers, April 25.
With over 350 registrations and four major Fort Hood units in support, this event promised to be a day filled with fun for Soldiers, civilians and family members who were not afraid to get a little dirty.
"This is the first year we conducted this event here at Camp Arrowhead," said Karol Pinkerton, a spouse from the 1st Cavalry Division's Special Troops Battalion and the Military Program Coordinator for the Killeen ASYMCA. "This is definitely a more family-friendly location than the training area we used the past two years."
Command Sgt. Maj. Donald R. Felt, senior non-commissioned officer, Fort Hood Garrison, opened the event and thanked the Soldiers from 4th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), 1st DSTB, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cav. Div. and 62nd Engineer Brigade for supporting and the ASYMCA for conducting the event at Ft. Hood.
The Mud Run included events for all participants: a 1.3 mile course for kids and youth, and a 3.0 mile rugged course with up-hills, valleys, and two creek crossings to get the runners muddy.
"We are proud of the relationship we have with the Killeen ASYMCA and the support they provide our Soldiers," said Maj. Alanna Cook, commander, Rear Detachment, 4th SB, 13th ESC, and lead military coordinator for the event.
"The Y provided free T-shirts, food and drinks for everyone and made it a great event," said Cook.
Pinkerton stated that the primary focus of the ASYMCA is to provide continuous support to the Soldiers and their families, especially their children. They also support the Fort Hood Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers [BOSS] program.
