    1st Theater Sustainment Command

FORT KNOX Ky.--1st Theater Sustainment Command (TSC) hosted a volunteer award ceremony at Waybur Theater for the Soldiers and civilians of 1st TSC who gave back to their community July 1, 2019.

Lt. Gen. Terry R. Ferrell, commanding general, U.S. Army Central (USARCENT), recognized 20 volunteers who collectively completed 9,287 volunteer hours for organizations in the community.

“You have to thank people who go above and beyond just wearing the uniform or supporting their family members who wear the uniform each and every day,” said Ferrell.

Volunteers dedicated their time and hard work to organizations in and around the Fort Knox community.

The Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Deborah Stephens. She serves as the deployment team lead, a CARE team member, as well as a member of the unit military ball committee. Stephens also assists in community deployment support, Family Readiness Group fundraising and updates and communicates with families through social media.

“I volunteer to hopefully make a difference in somebody’s life,” said Stephens. “My children are adults now and have their own lives, so when they are not around the military is my family. I would just hope, because I have children, that if they were away from home someone would do the same thing for them, so it’s just giving back.”

Theresa Scott, family readiness support assistant, 1st TSC, discussed the importance of being involved in the community.

“We are a part of our community and our families are part of our unit community," Scott said. "Volunteering brings cohesiveness and resiliency to our unit which means that our families are stronger."

Volunteers assisted the Soldier Family Readiness Group, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Red Cross, blood and bone marrow drives, Wreaths Across America, Elizabethtown Food Bank, Child Appointed Special Advocates for CASA of the Heartland, Homes for Humanity, local ministries, hospice care, Girl and Boy Scouts of America, veterinarian clinics, veteran centers, coaching and mentorship.

“The 1st TSC volunteer program is so successful because when a Soldier or civilian becomes a part of 1st TSC, I call their family members, welcome them personally and invite them to participate in the Soldier Family Readiness Group,” said Scott.

Soldiers and civilians are selflessly giving back to their communities in all different ways. They have achieved goals by increasing the amount of volunteer hours by 916 percent from the previous year.

“You all had phenomenal statistics across the board and really achieved high standards,” said Ferrell.
