The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport will mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of its originating command on July 29 at 10 a.m.
The commemoration will feature the unveiling of a new monument dedicated to the men and women who researched, developed, tested, evaluated, and manufactured the weapons and underwater systems vital to the nation’s undersea warfare (USW) superiority through two World Wars, the Cold War and other key periods of the past 150 years, through today’s challenges throughout the world’s seas and oceans, and keeping the Navy’s USW superiority second to none in the future.
Gov. Gina Raimondo and Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, both D-RI, are scheduled to attend.
In 1869, the Naval Torpedo Station on Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island, was founded as the Navy’s first research and development laboratory for undersea warfare weapons. The station evolved through many name changes and reconfiguration of missions over the years: The Naval Torpedo Station (1869-1951), The Naval Underwater Ordnance Station (1951-1966), The Naval Underwater Weapons Research and Engineering Station (1966-1970), The Naval Underwater Systems Center (1970-1992), and finally NUWC Division Newport in 1992.
Over the course of its history, the various iterations of the command incorporated many other related organizations including The Central Torpedo Office (1947); The Naval Underwater Systems Engineering Center (1966); The Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory (1970); The Underwater Sound Reference Division/Detachment Naval Research Laboratory Detachment Orlando (1995) and the Naval Sea Combat Systems Engineering Station (1995).
NUWC Newport is the largest federal activity in Rhode Island in terms of personnel and payroll. Its total funded program reached $1.12 billion in 2018. Of its total operating budget, $926.6 million was spent in payroll, construction, facility support and local contracts.
NUWC Newport’s employee base includes 3,332 government civilians and 41 military members. In addition to the government workforce, NUWC Newport contracted for approximately 2,602 work years during 2018 bringing its combined government and contractor workforce to more than 5,934 positions.
